Fisher & Paykel Ranges F6 Error: Gas igniter / valve fault

Fisher & Paykel range error code F6 is a high-severity fault meaning Gas igniter or gas valve fault (dual-fuel & gas range). Do not attempt to operate the oven if F6 is active and any gas odour is present. A power-cycle will clear the F6 display, but the underlying ignition fault will cause the code to return on the next ignition attempt.

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. Do not attempt to operate the oven if F6 is active and any gas odour is present. The oven gas valve may not be sealing properly. Ventilate the area, switch off the range, and call a qualified gas appliance technician.

Can I reset the code?

No. A power-cycle will clear the F6 display, but the underlying ignition fault will cause the code to return on the next ignition attempt. Physical repair of the igniter or gas valve is required.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Any persistent or strong gas odour — evacuate and call gas utility, Code returns on every ignition attempt.

Symptoms You May Notice

F6 displayed; oven burner will not light

The E.R.C. detects that the oven gas burner has not ignited within the trial-for-ignition period and displays F6 as a safety fault.

Clicking sound without ignition

The spark module fires repeatedly but the oven burner does not establish a flame, suggesting a glow bar igniter or gas valve issue.

Smell of gas before fault appears

A brief gas odour may precede F6 if the gas valve opened but the igniter failed to light the burner — the valve closes automatically on fault.

Possible Causes

1

Weak or failed glow bar igniter

The glow bar igniter must reach sufficient temperature (approximately 2,500°F / 1,370°C) to open the gas valve bimetal. A weak igniter draws insufficient current and cannot open the valve, so the burner never lights.

2

Failed gas safety valve

The bimetal safety valve that the igniter heats has failed open or closed, preventing gas flow to the oven burner.

3

Spark module failure (surface burner variant)

On models that use a spark ignition system for the oven, a failed spark module will not generate the high-voltage spark needed to ignite the burner.

DIY Possible
4

Interrupted gas supply

A closed shutoff valve, a tripped gas regulator, or low gas pressure from the utility will prevent any ignition regardless of igniter condition.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Ventilate the kitchen

If you detect a gas odour, open windows and doors immediately. Do not operate any electrical switches. If the smell is strong or persists, evacuate and call your gas utility from outside the building.

A brief, faint gas smell during a failed ignition attempt is normal; a persistent or strong gas smell is not.

  2. 2

Confirm gas supply to the range

Check that the gas shutoff valve behind the range is fully open (handle parallel to the pipe). Confirm that other gas appliances in the home (cooktop burners, water heater) are functioning normally.

A tripped gas meter regulator or utility outage will affect all gas appliances simultaneously.

  3. 3

    Test glow bar igniter visually

With the oven cool, remove the oven bottom panel and locate the glow bar igniter near the burner. Initiate a bake cycle and observe the igniter through the oven door (with the oven light on). A healthy igniter glows bright orange within 60 seconds. A dim orange glow or no glow indicates a weak or failed igniter.

Never touch the glow bar — it operates at extreme temperature and is very fragile.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Gas valve replacement requires certified gas appliance technician and gas line disconnection
  • Spark module replacement involves high-voltage ignition wiring
  • Any gas leak confirmed by detector or persistent odour
