The multi-layer door glass on Fisher & Paykel OB series built-in ovens and OR series ranges is designed for high thermal cycling. However, pre-existing chips, scratches on the inner surface, or hard impacts can create stress concentration points that cause the glass to shatter spontaneously during or after a baking or roasting cycle.

Why It Matters

Tempered glass, when it fails, breaks into many small fragments rather than large shards — but these fragments can still cause cuts and are dispersed over a wide area. Spontaneous glass breakage during a high-temperature cycle is startling and can cause reactive burns from nearby hot surfaces. Keeping the door glass in good condition is an important routine safety measure.

What to Check

  • Inspect all door glass panels (inner, intermediate, and outer) before each use for chips, cracks, or scratches.
  • Never close the oven door forcefully — lower it gently to avoid micro-impacts on the glass layers.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or metal scrapers on the inner door glass — use a damp cloth and manufacturer-approved oven cleaner.
  • Avoid spraying cold water near a hot oven door — thermal shock from rapid cooling can crack the glass.
  • Check that the door hinges open and close smoothly; a misaligned hinge creates uneven stress on the glass panels.
