Fisher & Paykel Pyrolytic Oven Self-Clean Ventilation — Safety Notices safety notice from the Fisher & Paykel repair guide.
Fisher & Paykel OB series pyrolytic ovens use temperatures above 450 °C (842 °F) to incinerate food residue during the self-clean cycle. This process produces smoke, odors, and combustion byproducts including carbon monoxide and acrolein. Adequate kitchen ventilation is essential before and during every pyrolytic cycle.
Why It Matters
Pyrolytic combustion byproducts can irritate airways and, in poorly ventilated spaces, reach levels hazardous to people with respiratory conditions. Pet birds are extremely sensitive to cooking fumes and must be removed from the home before running the self-clean cycle. The oven exterior also reaches high temperatures during pyrolytic cleaning; contact with the door or side panels can cause burns.
What to Check
- Open kitchen windows and activate the range hood on its highest setting before starting the self-clean cycle.
- Remove all cookware, oven racks (unless specified as pyrolytic-safe), and foil lining before starting.
- Do not leave the home or go to sleep while the pyrolytic cycle is running.
- Keep children and pets out of the kitchen for the full duration of the cycle and the cool-down period.
- Allow the oven to cool completely (typically 2–3 hours) before opening the door after the cycle ends.
When to Call a Pro
If the oven produces excessive smoke, the door does not unlock after the cool-down period, or error codes appear mid-cycle, contact Fisher & Paykel service at 1-888-936-7872.
