Fisher & Paykel Gas Cooktop Flame Failure Device (FFD) Explained

Fisher & Paykel Gas Cooktop Flame Failure — Safety Notices safety notice from the Fisher & Paykel repair guide.

All current Fisher & Paykel CG series gas cooktops are equipped with a Flame Failure Device (FFD) on every burner. The FFD is a thermocouple that senses whether a flame is present and automatically shuts off the gas supply if the flame is extinguished by a boilover, draft, or accidental contact with the burner knob.

Why It Matters

Without an FFD, an extinguished burner would continue releasing unburned gas into the kitchen, creating explosion and asphyxiation risks. The FFD is a passive safety system that operates without any action from the user. However, it requires regular maintenance to function reliably. A dirty or corroded thermocouple will cause the burner to cut out shortly after ignition even when the flame is burning normally, which is a sign that service is needed.

What to Check

  • After lighting a burner, hold the knob depressed for 3–5 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up and confirm the flame before releasing.
  • If a burner repeatedly cuts out within seconds of ignition, clean the thermocouple tip with a dry cloth — do not use abrasive cleaners.
  • Inspect burner caps for food debris blocking the flame ports, which prevents the thermocouple from receiving full heat.
  • Do not use the cooktop if an FFD malfunction is confirmed; contact a technician for thermocouple replacement.

When to Call a Pro

Thermocouple replacement involves disassembly of the burner assembly and gas fittings. Always use a Fisher & Paykel authorized technician for this repair.
