Hazard

The upper door hinge pin on certain Fisher & Paykel ActiveSmart refrigerators can fracture under normal use, causing the refrigerator door to fall unexpectedly. A falling door poses a serious laceration and crush hazard to consumers, particularly children.

Affected Models

E440T, E521T, and E522B ActiveSmart refrigerator/freezer models manufactured between July 2005 and February 2009. The model label is located inside the refrigerator compartment on the left side wall.

Units Affected

Approximately 68,000 units sold in the United States.

What to Do

  1. Do not slam or forcefully close the refrigerator door.
  2. Inspect the upper hinge area for visible cracks or unusual door play.
  3. Contact Fisher & Paykel for a free in-home hinge replacement by a certified technician.
  4. Keep children away from the appliance until the repair is complete.
